Member Responsibilities for Delivery

There are several guidelines to follow to ensure delivery service.

Packaging/Labeling

  • Items must be clearly labeled with a ILDS label (for items being transferred outside the NSLS system), a colored routing slip from NSLS or a design of your own that may make routing easier for you. When reusing multiple-use transfer slips, be sure to cross off any previous destinations to ensure correct routing of the materials.
  • Clearly and completely identify the destination. Remember that our member libraries share some elements of their names. Only indicating “Lake Forest”, for example, could mean Lake Forest Public Library, Lake Forest College, Lake Forest Academy, Lake Forest High School, Lake Forest Hospital, or a number of other member sites that have “Lake Forest” as part of their name.
  • Books should be securely wrapped with two rubber bands to reduce possible damage and insure that the routing slip and any enclosed paperwork is not lost.
  • Tape may be used to attach the label to the rubber bands. Do not tape directly to library materials.
  • No more than a few books should be banded together, and stacks should be kept as squared up as possible. “Pyramid” stacking makes the bundles very unstable and may come apart in transit, causing delays in delivery.
  • When quantities to specific destinations are large enough, sorting can be done directly into bags.
    • Bags should be clearly marked indicating all material contained within are going to the same destination. Be sure to remove any previously attached label from the bag to avoid confusion in routing.
    • Full bags should be packed as tightly as possible to prevent spillage in transit. The bottom of the bag should be packed flat with larger or heavier books or bundles.
    • The bags are rectangular in shape and should be packed that way. When full, the bag handles should be able to be grabbed with one hand.
    • When an entire bag is labeled for a single destination, the material inside should still be rubber-banded to ensure stability of the bag, especially when the bag contains many CD’s, video tapes, and other small items that may spill in transit.
    • Avoid the use of staples to attach tags to the bags or bag handles.
  • To request routing labels or additional bags, call NSLS Delivery Services or inform your van driver.

Items Sent Outside NSLS

  • Address with an ILDS label.
  • Provide all information requested on form.
  • Call to receive a sheet of labels you may duplicate.

Weight and Size Limitations

  • Limit of 20 lbs. per box. Drivers may leave boxes determined to be heavier than this weight limit for their safety and space availability in the van.
  • Boxes should be closed, securely taped and clearly marked with their destination.
  • For an unusually large pickup, call in advance to make special arrangements. Due to variances in daily volume and space limitations, your regular van driver may not always be able to pick-up such items.

Library Closings

Please notify NSLS of your library's closings for holidays, in-service days, etc., by either calling Delivery Services or informing your van driver.
