Delivery Frequently Asked Questions for Deliverable Items

What items can be transferred between libraries via the NSLS van delivery service?
The van delivery service should only be used to transfer interlibrary loan and reciprocal borrowing books, CD’s, videos, magazines and other classified and cataloged items between libraries.

What about overdue notices for the items that have been borrowed by other libraries?
Overdue notices that can’t be mailed directly to the borrowing patron should be mailed directly to the borrowing library. US Postal Regulations specifically prohibit the transfer of letters, notices and other correspondence that is not directly connected to or enclosed in the material being transferred.

Can items being donated to another library be moved via the van delivery service?
This would depend on the destination and volume of material being shipped. Space is very limited on our delivery vans, and we may not be able to take such items on days when the volume of material is particularly heavy. Materials also have to meet the guidelines set forth by ILDS for shipments outside our system. Please contact the Delivery Dept. at NSLS if you have such material to transfer.

Can I send checks to NSLS via the van delivery service to pay for programs?
No. Items such as checks, insurance information and other correspondence will be more secure going through the mail system and again, would constitute a violation of US Postal Regulations to be carried via our vans.

We found a patron’s library card in one of the books returned to us. Can we return it to their home library via the van service?
No. Any personal items found in returned books should be mailed back to the appropriate library.
